Stichting KLABU believes that everyone living in refugee camps should have a place to play. Working with refugees and host community members, KLABU builds community-led sports clubs in refugee camps, creating welcoming places where everyone can play.
The Project
KLABU will launch a sports clubhouse in Kampala, bringing refugees and host-community Ugandans together through play. ISPO’s contribution will fund the renovation of the host school’s football pitch, sports shoes and clothing, sports equipment and games, and equipment for a refugee-led football academy.
The Issue
Kampala is home to over 150,000 refugees, mostly from South Sudan and DR Congo, who face mental health struggles, high living costs and daily barriers to belonging alongside their Ugandan neighbours.
The Project
The clubhouse, built on a local school site and staffed by both refugees and host-community members, will offer a consistent weekly programme of sports and play for both groups, launching in January 2027 following the clubhouse’s arrival in Kampala.
The Impact
By December 2027, the clubhouse aims to have welcomed 3,000 unique participants from refugee and host communities, while building local capacity alongside Youth Sport Uganda to lay the foundations for long-term, community-owned operation.
