Fundación Legacy is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to transforming tourism into a force for positive change in Patagonia. We collaborate with Torres del Paine National Park and its neighbouring communities on conservation and development projects. Our goal is to alleviate pressure on the area’s natural resources and bridge local economic gaps.
The Project
Fundación Legacy will staff and operate a newly built native-plant nursery inside Torres del Paine National Park, growing 7,000 native plants a year to restore damaged habitat.
The Issue
Until late 2025, Torres del Paine National Park, one of the world’s most famous trekking and climbing destinations, lacked on-site facilities to propagate its diverse native flora. Restoration efforts were forced to rely solely on trees grown over two hours away, even as various ecosystems continued to suffer the impacts of human activity, including wildfire.
The Project
The project brings the newly built nursery to life: training park rangers, engaging volunteers, and folding greenhouse visits and conservation workdays directly into trekking and tour itineraries so hikers can take part in restoring the landscape they’ve come to see.
The Impact
The goal is to propagate at least 7,000 plants annually year-round, while completing a business plan to make the nursery financially self-sustaining long-term.
