Umbrella Sussex is a volunteer run community group made up of locals who are affected by climate change and poverty. Our mission is to show how easy it is to take climate action when we work together and our especial focus is working with poorer and marginalized parts of the community, getting then aware of the climate crisis, and offering actions that make sense for their circumstances.
The Project
Umbrella Sussex will run regular volunteer beach cleans in Hastings, sorting and repurposing recovered plastic and fishing waste through community craft workshops.
The Issue
Hastings’ three miles of coastline are under constant pressure from fishing debris, washed-up litter and plastic pollution, in one of England’s most deprived towns.
The Project
Trained volunteer teams will run regular beach cleans, sorting and weighing recovered waste before repurposing usable material into craft resources at the group’s Scrap Shed for local artists and schools.
The Impact
The project expects growing volunteer involvement and community engagement, turning beach waste into a low-cost resource while building long-term environmental stewardship among residents.
