The Blue World Institute of Marine Research and Conservation (BWI) works to protect the marine environment in the Adriatic Sea. To that purpose, the Blue World Institute operates three programmes – research, education, and conservation.
The Project
Blue World Institute will engage divers, sailors, students and residents in protecting Posidonia seagrass meadows around Čikat Bay, Lošinj.
The Issue
Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows are a protected priority habitat that store significant blue carbon and support rich marine biodiversity, but they continue to decline across the Mediterranean due to anchoring, litter and coastal development.
The Project
The project will run workshops, clean-ups and citizen-science activities engaging local sports clubs, schools, diving centres and the wider community in Čikat Bay, fostering greater awareness and stewardship of the Lošinj archipelago’s marine environment, which includes some of the best-preserved Posidonia sites in the northern Adriatic.
The Impact
By December 2027, the project aims to involve at least 150 participants in building long-term local stewardship of this ecosystem.
